Landscaping Guides
Written against the actual soil survey and climate record for this city, because generic national landscaping advice was not written for 19.68 inches of rain, 74 days a year over 100F, and a cemented layer the width of a spade blade under the grass.
The cornerstone guide. What the climate and the ground here allow, how a design gets built around the water it will realistically get, which work answers which problem, what it all costs, and what belongs in a written quote.
Installed pricing with the sources named: design and build, xeriscape conversion, irrigation, drip retrofits, patios, sod, trees and mulch, and where caliche depth moves the number.
Where landscape water goes here, why spray and drip are not the same act in this heat, how zones and controllers should be set, and the establishment watering that decides a new planting.
What the USDA soil survey records beneath this county, what depth to secondary carbonate means for a root, how to test your own lot in twenty minutes, and what to do when the shovel stops.
What a xeriscape is, the elements that make one work, how much water it saves and where the saving comes from, and the establishment schedule that decides whether it survives.
Shrubs, perennials, succulents, grasses and trees that perform on 19.68 inches of rain a year, with the freeze-hardiness lesson from February 2021 built into the selection.
Bermuda, St. Augustine, zoysia and buffalograss compared on water demand, shade tolerance and wear, plus how much lawn is worth keeping once you price what it drinks.
Where to place a tree so it does thermal work, which species give shade fastest, how a planting pit is dug on caliche, and when a built structure beats waiting for a canopy.
Why a place averaging under 20 inches of rain still has drainage problems, how to read a lot after a storm, and the order in which grading, swales and hard surfaces should be tackled.
Surface temperature, base preparation on caliche, shade structures, drainage around a slab, and what belongs on a hardscape quote before you sign it.
For something shorter, try the field notes. Words that turn up on a quote are defined in the glossary, and thirty common questions get direct answers over in the FAQ.
