Landscaping in Pueblo Nuevo

Pueblo Nuevo was carved out as a separately counted community before the 2010 census, out of a larger area that had been mapped under a different name. What that history means on the ground is a settlement pattern of modest lots that were developed over time rather than platted all at once, which produces a good deal of variation from property to property in soil depth, grade, and what has already been done to the yard.

That variation is the reason a site visit here is worth more than a plan drawn from an aerial photograph. Two houses on the same street can have completely different working depth before the shovel hits a cemented layer, and the plant list and the tree-pit price both follow from that number. A dig test in three or four spots takes twenty minutes and prevents the most expensive category of surprise.

The design logic is the same as everywhere in this county and it starts from water rather than from a style. Turf is where residential landscape water goes, and a spray head throwing water across an open lot in July gives up a large share of it to evaporation and wind before it ever reaches root depth. A yard built with beds on drip and a small, genuinely used lawn area keeps looking like a landscape through the worst of the summer on a fraction of the water. A yard that is all turf does not.

Shade is the other priority worth naming. In a place averaging 74.2 days a year at or above 100F, a tree on the west side of a house is doing measurable work on both comfort and cooling load, and there is no substitute for it in a planting plan. Fast species give useful canopy in three to five years; a live oak takes closer to a decade and is worth planting anyway.
