The complete guide to landscaping in Laredo

The climate numbers that set the brief, the ground that sets the limits, the water that decides the layout, and what the work costs once all three are accounted for.

Almost every landscaping mistake made in this city comes from applying advice written somewhere else. Laredo has a hot semi-arid climate, classified BSh, taking 19.68 inches of rain in an average year, running an average July high of 100.3F and 74.2 days a year at or above 100F, with a record high of 115F. Its only water source is the Rio Grande, and rain that light in heat that persistent means anything planted here is living on irrigation rather than on weather. Under the ground, a cemented carbonate layer sits close enough to the surface that an ordinary excavation runs into it. A design that ignores any one of those three facts fails in its second summer.

Three constraints, and everything else follows

Sun. Where does the afternoon sun land between two and seven? In a city with this many days over 100F, afternoon exposure is the difference between a plant that thrives and the same plant, in the same soil, that scorches. It also determines which part of the yard is worth putting a patio on and where a shade tree does thermal work rather than decorative work.

Ground. How far down does a spade go before it stops? The USDA soil survey records the Brennan series, established in the Laredo area in 1906, as a fine sandy loam carrying secondary calcium carbonate beneath, and the Webb series, named for this county, as a fine, smectitic, hyperthermic soil with sandy clay under the surface. Neither description tells you about your lot; a survey maps country, not properties, and two houses on one street can sit at opposite ends of the range it gives. Digging does tell you, and the answer changes the plant list, the tree pit price, and whether the excavation line in a quote is realistic.

Water. How much of the lot is going to be irrigated, and by what method? Laredo averages 19.68 inches of rain a year and takes much of it in a handful of storms, so anything planted here that is not a native shrub lives on what comes out of a pipe. That makes irrigated area a running cost rather than a one-off, and it is the number a design either controls at the drawing stage or pays for every month afterwards.

What the water does to a design

Turf is where residential landscape water goes, and spray is the method that loses most of it. A spray head throws water through the air on an exposed lot where the July daily high averages 100.3F, and a serious share never reaches root depth. Drip meters it onto the soil at the root zone instead. Follow that through and the shape of a well-built Laredo landscape falls out of it: a small, genuinely used lawn area on spray, everything else in planted beds on drip, and hard surface wherever nothing was going to thrive anyway.

  1. 1 Lawn, on spray or rotary heads. The thirstiest ground on the property and the only zone that has to be watered as a surface. Its size is a decision about how much lawn the household walks on, not a landscaping rule.
  2. 2 Planted band, on drip. Emitters put water into the soil at the roots, so almost none is lost to evaporation or wind. In July that difference is most of the water bill.
  3. 3 Dry edge. Cenizo, sotol, agave, yucca and native grasses, watered while they root and then left to the weather. This is the part of the yard that survives a drought restriction without anyone doing anything.
  4. 4 Shade on the west side of the house. Afternoon sun is the load that matters here, so a tree placed for late-day shade does more for the house than the same tree anywhere else on the lot.
  5. 5 The valve boundaries. Each zone runs on its own valve. One valve serving two zones has to be set for the thirstiest thing on it, which is how a bed gets a lawn schedule and drowns while the lawn is still dry.
Hydrozoning is the habit of grouping plants by water demand so one irrigation valve is never serving a lawn and a cactus bed on the same run time. On a Laredo lot the practical version is a sprinkler-irrigated lawn where the household walks, a drip-irrigated planted band around it, and an outer zone of rainfall-adapted planting that comes off irrigation once established.

The most common irrigation fault in this city is the one that layout rules out: a single zone feeding both a lawn and a shrub bed. One run time cannot satisfy both, so the bed is overwatered and the lawn is underwatered simultaneously, out of the same meter. Splitting that zone is usually the cheapest meaningful improvement available on an existing system.

The parts of the job that only happen once

Most yards here get built in phases as budget allows, and there is nothing wrong with that. What phasing cannot absorb is anything that ends up underneath something else. A sleeve laid across a future driveway is a length of pipe; the same crossing added after the concrete is down is a saw cut through a finished surface. Grade is the other one: soil preparation and planting done before the water has been made to leave the lot properly gets dug up when it is.

So the underground work and the grading are worth completing in the first phase whatever else waits. Everything visible, the paving, the planting, the mulch, can be added a year later at the same price it would have cost today.

Which work answers which problem

  • The water bill is too high. The answer is turf reduction and drip conversion, in that order. Turf is where the water goes, and shrinking the lawn to the part the household walks on is the change with the largest effect.
  • The yard is unusable in summer. The answer is shade, either planted or built. See shade trees and shade structures. Nothing else moves the needle on comfort the same way.
  • Plants keep dying. Usually one of three causes: species that were never adapted to this climate, establishment watering that stopped too early, or a planting pit that trapped roots on top of a cemented layer. Xeriscape planting addresses the first, a written schedule the second, and a proper pit the third.
  • Water stands after a storm. That is a grading problem, and it is worth fixing before anything is planted. See design and installation, where drainage is the first stage.
  • The yard looks like a builder left it. That is a design problem rather than a plant problem, and it usually resolves into defining an edge, adding structure, and putting the irrigation on a rational zone layout.

Plants: the list is longer than people expect

The reliable palette here is not a compromise. Cenizo, which the Texas Legislature designated the State Native Shrub in 2005 under the name Texas Purple Sage, carries silver foliage year round and flowers after humid spells with no summer irrigation once established. Esperanza, lantana, salvias, damianita and blackfoot daisy give color from spring to first frost. Sotol, agave and yucca provide architectural form. Anacahuita, Texas ebony, cedar elm and live oak give canopy, with mesquite, huisache and retama available where speed matters more than form.

For grasses, the soil survey is more useful than any catalogue: the USDA lists buffalograss, tanglehead and trichloris as the climax vegetation on the Webb series, which is a direct statement about what this ground grows without help. Sideoats grama, the Texas state grass since 1971, works as an ornamental in beds. Prickly pear, the state plant since 1995, grows wild within sight of most properties in the county.

The February 2021 winter storm is the other input into any plant list here. It pushed hard freezing temperatures much further south than the usual design assumption, killing tropical and subtropical ornamentals across South Texas while established natives largely came back from the base. The reasonable conclusion is to build the permanent structure of a yard from species with a record of surviving cold events on this ground, and to treat tender tropicals as replaceable color rather than as the backbone. When to do the work

Planting belongs in the cool season, October through March. A plant installed in June spends its establishment window under conditions that stress mature specimens, while one installed in November has several mild months to push roots into surrounding soil before the heat arrives. That root extension is the entire difference between a plant that needs occasional water and one that needs constant water.

Hardscape and irrigation can be built at any time of year, which is useful, because it means a phased project can put the construction in during summer and the planting in during autumn without wasting a season.

What belongs in a written quote

A detailed quote is doing something useful for the person paying it. A plant list naming species and quantities, rather than "shrubs" and "groundcover", fixes what is actually going in the ground. An irrigation zone count with the spray zones and the drip zones identified says how the yard will be watered for the next twenty years. Soil preparation described by location says where the money went that nobody will ever see. And an establishment watering schedule with dates on it is the difference between plants that live and plants that were watered until somebody got busy.

Any plant warranty and what voids it belongs in writing too, because the thing that most often voids one is establishment watering that stopped in month three. Where two prices for the same yard are a long way apart, the gap is usually scope rather than margin: a smaller piece of work, honestly priced, looks identical to a bargain until the detail is read.

What it costs

Published national installed ranges give brackets to plan against: mulch delivered and spread roughly $175 to $600, sod around $0.90 to $2.50 a square foot laid, a drip conversion on one zone $400 to $1,500, a shade tree supplied and planted $300 to $3,000 depending mostly on the size of the container it arrives in, paving roughly $15 to $40 a square foot, a full irrigation system on an average lot $3,000 to $8,000, and a whole yard design and build anywhere from $8,000 to $40,000.

The local variable that moves those numbers hardest is the ground. Where the cemented layer sits high, trenching and tree pits become rock saw and breaker work and the excavation line can double. That is why a dig test before the quote is written matters, and why a quote with a stated allowance and a change-order process is a better document than one with a confident flat number. The short version

  • Measure the sun and the caliche depth, and decide how much of the lot gets irrigated, before anything is designed.
  • Put beds on drip and keep spray zones to lawn people use.
  • Never let one valve serve two different water budgets.
  • Get the grading and the underground work done first; they are the parts nothing else can be undone around.
  • Plant in the cool season, and water new plantings for two full summers.
  • Build the permanent structure from species with a record on this ground, including through cold events.
  • Buy shade early; it is the cheapest thing that changes how the yard feels.
