Landscaping in Botines

Five miles north of the city puts Botines on the higher, drier ground where Laredo stops being a city and starts being ranch country. The ground stands well above the river here, and the vegetation reflects it: this is mesquite, huisache, guajillo and prickly pear country, and the native brush is a fair guide to what will survive in a planted yard without constant irrigation.

Lots out here are generally larger than city lots, which changes the design problem entirely. On a quarter-acre city plot the question is how to fit everything in; on two or five acres the question is which portion to landscape at all. The approach that works is a defined, irrigated zone close to the house, a transitional planted area beyond it using species that need water only through establishment, and then the native brush left as it is. Trying to treat five acres as a garden is how people end up with an irrigation bill they cannot justify and a maintenance schedule they cannot keep.

Water supply is the practical variable to establish before anything is designed. A property on a municipal connection has mains pressure and a meter behind it. A property on a rural water supply or a private well has whatever the line and the pump will deliver, and the zone sizing, the emitter layout and the pump requirement all follow from which of those applies. That question is worth answering on the first visit rather than after the trenches are open.

The exposure here is real. There is little in the way of established canopy on the higher ground, wind runs across open lots, and afternoon sun is unbroken. A shade tree placed on the west side of the house is the highest-value single planting on most of these properties, and it is worth spending on a wide planting pit that gets through the cemented layer rather than economizing on the hole and replacing the tree in six years.
