Shade, and where to put it

In a city with an average July high of 100.3F, shade is not a finishing touch. It is the improvement that decides whether the yard gets used at all.

Rank every possible landscape improvement by how much it changes daily life per dollar spent, and in this climate shade wins outright. Laredo logs 74.2 days a year at 100F or hotter, and the all-time high on record is 115F. A patio in full afternoon sun is furniture nobody sits on. Put a canopy over the same slab and it becomes the room the household uses from March to November. Nothing else in a yard produces that size of change.

Shade also does work you do not see. A canopy over a west wall lowers the surface temperature of that wall through the afternoon, which lowers the heat load the air conditioning has to remove. Bare soil and paving under a tree stay cooler, which means the plants near them lose less water. Shade is the only landscape element that reduces the running cost of everything around it.

The west side is where it belongs

Morning sun is not the problem here. The heat that matters arrives from the west and southwest between about two and seven in the afternoon, when air temperature is already at its peak and low sun angles push light under eaves and straight through windows. A tree placed on the south side of a house casts most of its shadow onto its own trunk at midday and does little for the building. The same tree standing off the west wall throws a long shadow across that wall and its windows exactly when it counts.

So the placement rule is short. Find where the afternoon sun lands on the house, the patio and the driveway, then plant west and southwest of those things. If the goal is comfort on a patio, the tree goes on the patio's west edge. If the goal is a lower cooling bill, it goes near the west-facing glass. If the goal is a cooler car, it goes over the parking area, which in most Laredo neighborhoods is the hottest surface on the lot.

Two constraints override the sun angle. Keep large canopies clear of the sewer lateral and the water service, and keep them well clear of overhead power. Utility trimming turns a good tree into a bad shape permanently.

Fast, or good

Every conversation about shade trees runs into the same trade. The fast species are fast because they build light, brittle wood, and the trees that stand for eighty years take their time getting there.

On the fast side: mesquite, huisache and retama. All three establish quickly on this ground, all three tolerate drought once away, and all three give filtered rather than deep shade. Mesquite in particular casts a dappled light that plants underneath genuinely like. The cost is form. These species drop litter, throw thorns in some cases, and can lose limbs in a hard wind.

On the slow side: live oak, cedar elm and Texas ebony. Live oak is the biggest, spreading wider than it stands, and it is the one that changes a whole yard once it is up. Cedar elm is a full-size shade tree too and takes heavier soil comfortably. Texas ebony holds a dense evergreen canopy without ever becoming a monument, which makes it the best fit for a small city lot. Anacahuita is smaller again, flowers most of the warm season, and works as a patio tree.

The sensible answer on most lots is both. Plant the slow tree where it will eventually do the main job, and plant a fast one where its shade is useful in the meantime and where losing it later is no loss. The plant list covers what the rest of the palette grows into.

The pit is the whole job

More trees fail here from how the hole was dug than from what was planted in it. Soils across this area carry secondary calcium carbonate at shallow depth. The USDA set up the Brennan series for the Laredo area in 1906 and records that carbonate beneath a fine sandy loam with a sandy clay loam horizon; the Webb series carries it too. Neither description tells you anything about a particular lot, and the depth often changes within a few paces on the same property.

Where that cemented layer is close to the surface, a hole dug to the width of the root ball becomes a bucket. Roots hit the sides and circle. Water collects in the bottom with nowhere to drain and the tree sits in it. The tree looks fine for three or four years, then stalls, and eventually leans in a windstorm because it never built a root plate wider than the hole it came in.

The only variable is whether the crust was broken.
  1. 1 Topsoil and subsoil. Sandy loam over a heavier sandy clay loam. This is the part a spade moves.
  2. 2 The cemented carbonate layer, the caliche. Calcium carbonate that has moved down through the soil and hardened into a crust. It is where a shovel stops and where a trencher starts costing money.
  3. 3 Hole stopped on the layer. Roots reach the wall of the pit, find nothing they can enter, and turn back on themselves. The tree stays alive and stops getting bigger.
  4. 4 Water in a closed hole. Rain and irrigation run through the loose backfill, meet the crust, and stand there. The pit behaves as a container with no drain, and the roots sit in it.
  5. 5 Hole taken out past the layer. Roots leave the backfill and enter undisturbed soil, which is the only way a tree ever anchors itself.
  6. 6 Water with somewhere to go. Once the crust is broken the pit drains, and the difference between a tree that establishes and one that sulks for a decade is usually this and nothing else.

The geometry that works is the opposite: wide and shallow. Wide, because roots travel outward far more than downward and every extra inch of loosened ground at the sides is ground they can enter. Shallow, because a tree set into loose fill settles, and a trunk flare that ends up buried is a slow death nobody connects to the planting day. Where the cemented layer sits in the way it has to be broken somewhere, or the water has nowhere to go. And the backfill is the soil that came out of the hole: filling a pit with rich imported mix on this ground gives roots no reason to leave it.

That is also the line item that moves a quote. Where a breaker or a rock saw is needed, the excavation cost climbs sharply, which is why a dig test in several spots before a price is written is normal practice here and why the soil guide matters as much as the plant list.

Staking, and mostly not staking

A tree that can move a little in the wind builds a stronger trunk than one held rigid. Most container stock planted here does not need staking at all. Where it does, because the site is exposed or the canopy is large relative to the root ball, the pattern is two or three low stakes with a broad flexible tie that still allows some sway, set for one growing season and then removed. Ties left on for years girdle the trunk, and that damage is permanent. Putting a removal date in the maintenance notes is the simplest fix.

Built shade, and when it is the better answer

A tree takes years. A structure works the afternoon it goes up. On a small lot, over a patio, or next to a pool where leaf litter is a nuisance, built shade is often the right call rather than a compromise.

A shade sail is the cheapest option and the fastest to install, and its life depends entirely on the anchor points, which need real structure or set posts rather than a fence rail. A pergola gives filtered shade and a permanent frame that a vine can grow over. A ramada with a solid roof gives full shade and rain cover and is the most useful of the three in a climate where rain arrives all at once. Anything with footings is a different piece of work from anything without, because the post holes have to get through the cemented carbonate layer rather than bearing on it. The strongest layout uses both. Built shade over the seating area for certainty, and a tree to the west of it for the next twenty years.

Watering a new tree

A newly planted tree is drawing water from a root ball, not from your yard. Until roots move out into surrounding soil, watering the lawn around it does very little. Water goes on the root ball and just past its edge, slowly enough to soak in rather than run off, and the interval stretches through the first two years as the roots extend.

Drip or a slow-release bag delivers that far better than a sprinkler zone does. A spray head wets the whole area around the tree, most of which the roots cannot reach yet, and loses a share of the output to evaporation on the way down. An emitter or a bag sitting on the root ball puts the water exactly where the roots currently are, at a rate the ground can absorb, and it does the same job through the second summer as the ring of wetted soil is widened.

Plant between October and March. A tree put in during June spends its establishment window in conditions that stress mature specimens. Short version

  • Plant west and southwest of whatever you want cooled.
  • Combine one slow long-life tree with one fast one you can lose later.
  • Wide and shallow beats deep and narrow, break the cemented layer, backfill with the soil that came out.
  • Stake only when the site demands it, and take the ties off after one season.
  • Use built shade where you need the effect this year.
  • Water the root ball, not the lawn, for the first two years.
