Water, and where it goes
Under 20 inches of rain a year, a July that averages over 100F, and one river behind all of it. Everything else on this page follows from this section.
How often should I water my lawn in Laredo?
Less often than most controllers are set for, and for longer each time. Deep, infrequent watering pushes roots down; short daily cycles hold them up near the surface, in the layer that dries out first and fails first in a hot spell. The limit is how fast the ground will take it. Sandy loam over a cemented layer absorbs only so quickly, and one long soak on a compacted lawn runs off down the driveway, which is what cycle-and-soak fixes.
Why is drip better than spray in a planted bed?
Because most of what a spray head throws never gets to the roots. On an exposed Laredo lot in July, with the daily high averaging 100.3F and wind moving across the yard, a serious share of the output evaporates in flight, drifts onto paving, or sits on foliage and goes back into the air by mid-morning. Drip meters water onto the soil at the root zone at a rate the ground can absorb. It also keeps the gaps between plants dry, which is where weeds come from.
Where does Laredo get its water?
The Rio Grande, and only the Rio Grande. The city has no groundwater fallback and no second surface source. That is the reason irrigation efficiency is treated more seriously in this market than in most Texas cities, and the reason a yard built to survive on very little is worth more here than a yard that merely looks good in April.
Should new plants go on drip or be hand watered?
Drip, from day one, whatever the bed will eventually run on. A shrub out of a small nursery pot has a root ball the size of a grapefruit and no ability to reach water outside it, and an emitter sitting on that root ball delivers exactly what it needs without wetting the whole bed to get there. Hand watering works and it is what most people fall back on, but it means somebody standing there with a hose several evenings a week for two years, and the plants that die are the ones nobody stood in front of.
Will a xeriscape cut my bill?
It cuts it in proportion to how much irrigated turf comes out, because turf is where the water goes. Replacing a large sprinkler-irrigated lawn with beds on drip is a substantial reduction. Replacing shrub beds that were already on drip changes very little. If the goal is a lower bill, the honest first question is how many square feet of lawn are genuinely being used.
Should I install a rain sensor?
It is a small cost against a real benefit here. Laredo averages 19.68 inches of rain a year and takes a meaningful share of it in a handful of storms, so a controller running its normal program the morning after 2 inches of rain is pure waste. Most modern controllers accept a rain or soil moisture sensor, and retrofitting one to an existing system is usually straightforward.
The ground
Caliche is the first thing a shovel finds on most lots here, and it decides the plant list, the tree pit price, and how realistic the excavation line in a quote is.
What exactly is caliche?
A layer of calcium carbonate that has accumulated and cemented within the soil profile, common in dry climates where there is not enough rainfall to leach carbonates out of the root zone. It ranges from soft nodules you can break with a spade to a slab that needs a breaker. Across the Rio Grande Plain it sits close enough to the surface to be the defining constraint on planting.
What decides how deep the caliche is on my lot?
Nothing you can look up. The USDA soil survey records secondary calcium carbonate through the Brennan series, established in the Laredo area in 1906, but the range it gives is wide, and depth changes substantially inside a single property, so a survey that maps country cannot answer a question about a yard. Digging test holes in three or four places does answer it, and it prevents the most expensive category of surprise on a landscape job.
What soil is under Laredo?
Predominantly sandy loams and sandy clay loams of the Rio Grande Plain. The USDA describes the Brennan series as a fine sandy loam with an argillic horizon of sandy clay loam beneath, and the Webb series, named for this county, as a fine, smectitic, hyperthermic soil with a sandy clay subsoil. Smectitic means the clay fraction has shrink and swell behavior, and hyperthermic means the soil itself runs hot, both of which affect how a landscape performs.
Do I need to bring in topsoil?
Usually in the planted areas rather than across the whole lot. Amending an entire yard is expensive and does less for drought performance than people expect, because a plant in a pocket of rich soil surrounded by native ground tends to keep its roots in the pocket. Preparing the beds properly and choosing plants adapted to the surrounding soil is the more durable approach.
Why does my yard flood in one storm and stay bone dry the rest of the year?
Because that is the rainfall pattern here, and because a cemented layer under the surface can perch water rather than letting it drain. A large share of the 19.68 inches of rain a year can arrive in a few events, and a lot that has never been graded will show its low points then. Those are the moments worth photographing, because the evidence is invisible three weeks later when somebody is trying to diagnose it.
Can anything be planted directly into caliche?
Plants adapted to shallow, calcareous ground manage, which is exactly what the native brush flora is: mesquite, huisache, guajillo, cenizo, prickly pear and the native grasses grow on this ground without help. What does not work is putting a plant that wants deep ground into shallow ground and then irrigating harder to make up the difference.
Plants and planting
The plant list here is longer than people expect, and most of it is already growing untended within sight of the property.
What is the most reliable shrub for a Laredo yard?
Cenizo, which the Texas Legislature designated the State Native Shrub in 2005 under the name Texas Purple Sage, botanically Leucophyllum frutescens. Silver foliage year round, purple flowers after humid spells, no summer irrigation once established, and a natural mounded shape that does not need shearing. Several selections exist with different leaf color and mature size.
Which trees give shade without needing constant water?
Live oak for long-term canopy, cedar elm, anacahuita and Texas ebony for smaller structural trees, and mesquite, huisache and retama where speed and toughness matter more than form. All are adapted to this region. Species from wetter parts of Texas will grow here but need sustained irrigation to look good, which is a commitment worth understanding before planting.
When should I plant?
October through March. Laredo sees 74.2 days a year at or above 100F and an average July high of 100.3F, so a plant installed in June spends its establishment period under conditions that stress even mature specimens. Autumn planting gives roots several mild months to move into surrounding soil before the heat, which cuts both water demand and losses.
How long do new plants need watering?
Shrubs and perennials, through their first two summers. Trees, two to three growing seasons of regular deep watering. This is the single most common reason drought-tolerant plantings fail: the plants are perfectly capable of surviving without irrigation, but only once their roots have left the original root ball, and cutting water off in month three does not give them the chance.
What died in the February 2021 freeze and what came back?
The 2021 winter storm pushed hard freezing temperatures much further south than usual, and tropical and subtropical ornamentals across South Texas were killed outright while established natives largely resprouted from the base. The lesson most people took from it is to build the permanent structure of a yard from species with a record of surviving cold events on this ground, and to treat tender tropicals as replaceable color rather than as the backbone.
Are there native grasses worth using instead of lawn?
Yes, and the soil survey names them. The USDA lists buffalograss, tanglehead and trichloris as the climax vegetation on the Webb soil series, meaning those were the natural cover on this exact ground. Buffalograss can be used as a low-water lawn in full sun with light traffic. Sideoats grama, the Texas state grass since 1971, works as an ornamental grass in beds rather than as turf.
Will cactus and agave look out of place in a suburban front yard?
Only if they are the entire plan. Used as accent and structure among flowering shrubs and grasses they read as deliberate design rather than as desert theming. Prickly pear has been the Texas state plant since 1995 and grows wild within sight of most properties in this county, so there is nothing exotic about it here.
The work itself
What gets built, in what order, and how a project is sensibly split up when it cannot all happen at once.
What does a site visit cover?
Sun exposure through the afternoon, because that decides both the plant list and where a patio is worth putting. A dig test in three or four places to find the working depth before the shovel stops. Where water currently leaves the lot and where it stands after a storm. Any existing irrigation, run zone by zone while somebody watches the coverage. And what the household genuinely uses the yard for, which is what sizes the lawn. Twenty minutes of that shapes a quote more than an hour of conversation about styles.
In what order should a landscape be built?
Grading and drainage, then irrigation mainlines and sleeving under anything that will be paved, then hardscape, then soil preparation and planting, then mulch. On this ground the sequence is not a preference: a trench cut after a patio is poured means saw-cutting, and a bed planted before the grading is corrected gets dug up again.
What is the most common mistake on a landscape job here?
Skipping the dig test and pricing the excavation on an assumption. Everything downstream depends on the working depth: which trees the lot will support, what a planting pit has to become, whether a trench is spade work or rock saw work, and whether the number on the quote survives contact with the ground. The second most common mistake is planting in June, when the establishment window lands in conditions that stress even mature specimens.
What decides how long a landscape project takes?
Excavation first, and by a distance. Ground that a trencher walks through in one part of a lot can need a rock saw a few paces away, and that difference is measured in machine days rather than hours. After that it is how many trades the design needs and whether they can follow each other without waiting: hardscape, irrigation and planting are three different crews, and a stage that has to cure or settle before the next one starts puts calendar time into a job that has no labor in it at all.
Can the work be phased?
Most yards here are done in two or three stages, and it is a sensible way to spread the cost. The one thing worth doing in the first phase regardless is the underground work: mainlines, sleeving under future paving, and any grading. Those are the expensive and disruptive items, and installing them later means undoing finished work.
Should hardscape come before or after planting?
Before, in almost every case. Machinery, material deliveries and base compaction are hard on plants, and running a mini excavator across a new bed undoes the soil preparation underneath it. The exception is a large specimen tree that cannot be craned in once walls or structures are up, which sometimes has to be placed early and protected.

What the work costs, what should be written on the page, and what makes two quotes genuinely comparable.
What should be itemized on a landscape quote?
A plant list with species and quantities rather than "shrubs" and "groundcover", the irrigation zone count with which zones are spray and which are drip, what soil preparation is being done and where, mulch type and depth, an establishment watering schedule, and any plant warranty with what voids it. Each of those items is a decision somebody made about the yard, written down where it can be read.
Why do quotes for the same yard differ so much?
Usually because they are not the same piece of work. One may include grading and drainage where the other assumes the ground is fine. One may price a small containerized tree where the other prices a specimen several times its size. One may have tested the caliche depth and allowed for rock work where the other has not. A quote that itemizes is describing a piece of work; a lump sum is describing nothing.
Is the quote free?
Yes. The visit and the written quote cost nothing, and the price on it is the contractor's price, not one set here. Where a project needs a full measured design drawing rather than a quote, design fees are a normal part of the trade and should be stated up front rather than appearing later.
What is the cheapest thing that makes the biggest difference?
Shade, and then mulch. A tree or a shade structure over the part of the yard people occupy changes how usable the space is in a way nothing else does, in a city with 74.2 days a year at or above 100F. Mulch at proper depth across the beds cuts evaporation, moderates soil temperature and suppresses weeds for a fraction of the cost of any other intervention.
