Landscaping in Bruni

Bruni predates the oil by four decades. It was established in 1877 and named for Antonio Mateo Bruni, an Italian immigrant who ran a ranch and a general store, and its population peaked around 800 in 1939 with the discovery of the South Bruni oilfield. Ranching came first and it is still the frame for the landscape: this is open brush country, and the yards that look right here are the ones that acknowledge that rather than trying to import a suburban lawn into it.

Properties along Highway 359 tend to be larger than city lots, and the useful design move is to define an edge. A landscaped zone close to the house with irrigation, a transitional planted band beyond it that gets water only until it establishes, and native brush left alone past that. The edge itself can be a low wall, a gravel band, a mown line or a row of shrubs; what matters is that it exists, because an undefined boundary means the maintenance obligation keeps expanding.

Wind and sun are the two constant loads. There is little natural shelter in the open country, so windbreak planting on the prevailing side does real work, mulch needs to be a material that stays put, and any young tree needs staking done properly and then removed on schedule so the trunk develops the taper that lets it stand on its own.

Water supply here needs establishing before anything is sized. Rural properties may be on a water supply corporation connection or a private well, and available pressure and flow set the number of irrigation zones and the emitter layout. A system designed for city pressure and installed on a well pump underperforms in a way that is difficult and expensive to correct afterwards.
