Landscaping in El Cenizo

The town shares a name with the plant that grows wild across this whole county. Cenizo is the South Texas name for Leucophyllum frutescens, which the Texas Legislature designated the State Native Shrub in 2005 under the name Texas Purple Sage. It is the silver-leaved shrub that turns purple after a humid spell, it needs no summer irrigation once its roots are down, and it is the single most reliable structural plant available for a yard in this part of the state. Anyone designing a landscape in El Cenizo is starting with a plant list that includes the town namesake at the top of it.

El Cenizo and neighboring Rio Bravo were both developed by the same property developer and both incorporated in 1989, so the housing and the lots have a good deal in common. Yards tend to be flat, open, and finished with imported soil over a much harder subgrade, and the depth to a cemented carbonate layer varies enough within a single street that a dig test in two or three places is worth doing before a planting plan is drawn rather than after.

Flatwork at grade and a structure on footings are two different jobs on this ground, and it is worth having the scope say plainly which one is being priced. A patio slab or a paver field sits on a compacted base, and where the excavation reaches the cemented carbonate layer that layer does the bearing work for you. Post holes for a pergola have to get through the same layer rather than resting on it, which means an auger or a breaker and a different line in the price. That belongs in a written scope rather than in a conversation on the drive.

The most common project here is a turf reduction rather than a new build: an existing lawn that was never really used gets shrunk to the part the household walks on, and the rest goes to planted beds on drip. The water saving is immediate, and the plants that go in are the same ones growing untended in the brush a few hundred meters away.
