The name is a useful description of the site. Rolling ground behaves differently from a flat city lot in two ways that matter to a landscape. Water moves across it during the heavy rain events that deliver a large share of this region's 19.68 inches of rain a year, and soil depth varies with position on the slope: shallower and stonier toward the crest, deeper and finer toward the bottom. A planting plan that ignores that variation puts thirsty plants on the shallowest ground and wonders why they struggle.

The grading and drainage work is therefore the first conversation rather than an afterthought. On sloping ground the objective is to slow water down and spread it out rather than to channel it, because a channel across a yard scours in a heavy storm and does nothing in the eleven months when it does not rain. Swales, planted low points and terracing with retaining or seating walls all do that job, and they double as the structure of the finished landscape.

Being outside a city means the question of water supply has a different answer than it does in Laredo. It is worth establishing on the first visit whether the property is on a rural water supply, a private well, or a municipal connection, because the irrigation design follows directly from that and from the pressure and flow available. Sizing zones for a pressure that is not there is a common and expensive mistake on rural properties.

Beyond that, the plant palette is the same one that works everywhere on this side of the county: cenizo, esperanza, lantana, salvias and damianita for color, sotol, agave and yucca for form, and mesquite, huisache, retama, Texas ebony or anacahuita for canopy depending on how quickly shade is wanted and how long the property is expected to be held.
