Finding Your Caliche Depth in Twenty Minutes
A simple dig test that tells you how deep the caliche sits on your Laredo lot, what each depth means for planting, and how the number changes a tree pit price.
The most useful number about your property is not in any report. It is the depth at which a shovel stops. Everything downstream of it, the plant list, the tree pit, the trenching price, the drainage behaviour, is set by that one measurement, and it varies enough across Laredo that a neighbour’s answer tells you very little about your own lot.
Finding it takes about twenty minutes and no equipment you cannot rent for an afternoon.
What is down there
The USDA soil survey records the Brennan series, established in the Laredo area in 1906, as a fine sandy loam with depth to secondary calcium carbonate between 10 and 36 inches. The official series description sets out the full profile. The Webb series, named for this county, is described as a fine, smectitic, hyperthermic Aridic Paleustalf: very fine sandy loam over sandy clay, with native climax vegetation listed as trichloris grasses, tanglehead and buffalograss.
That range, 10 to 36 inches, is the whole story in one line. Two properties on the same street can sit at opposite ends of it. A survey range is a planning tool, not a site measurement, and no design should be drawn against it without a dig.
Caliche itself is calcium carbonate accumulated in the soil profile over a long time under low rainfall. Laredo averages 19.68 inches of precipitation a year, which is not enough to leach carbonates down and out of the profile, so they stay and cement. Depending on how cemented it is, caliche ranges from crumbly gravel you can break with a bar to a layer that needs a jackhammer or a rock saw.
Running the test
The howTo block above sets out the sequence step by step. The essentials are: wet the ground a day ahead so you are testing structure rather than dryness, dig narrow rather than wide, keep the hole walls clean so the profile change is visible, and test three or four spots rather than one.
Three or four matters because a single hole can land on an anomaly. A pocket of deeper soil where a builder backfilled, or a shallow ridge of hardpan, will give you a number that misrepresents the rest of the property. The spread across several holes is more informative than any individual figure.
You are recording two things at each spot: the depth where the material turns pale, chalky and resistant, and how the layer behaves when you drive a bar into it. Crumbling into gravel and ringing like stone are different problems with different prices.
Reading the result
Deeper than 30 inches. Comfortable. Trees can be planted conventionally, trenching is straightforward, and the plant list is open. This is the least constrained result available here.
18 to 30 inches. Workable for most planting. Small and medium trees are fine. Large canopy trees need a pit that breaks through the layer so roots and water can move past it, which adds to the excavation line but is entirely normal work.
10 to 18 inches. Constrained. Shallow-rooted shrubs, grasses and perennials perform well. Trees need deliberate pit construction or a raised planting area built above grade. Drainage becomes a live concern, because water reaching the layer moves sideways rather than down.
Under 10 inches. Shallow. The realistic responses are raised beds and berms built above the layer, a plant list drawn from species that tolerate it, or mechanical breaking where a tree genuinely has to go in a specific place. Hardscape starts looking attractive here, not as a compromise but because a paved surface over caliche is stable ground and a struggling lawn is not.

Why the tree pit is where the money is
A planting hole dug into soil that sits on top of an impermeable layer becomes a bucket. Water runs in, cannot drain out, and the root ball sits in it. Roots in a saturated pit suffocate. This is the most common cause of a tree that looked healthy for a year and then declined, and it has nothing to do with the species chosen.
The response is a pit that either penetrates the layer at one or more points to give water somewhere to go, or a planting position raised above the layer with soil built up around it. Both are ordinary practice. Both cost more than dropping a tree into a hole, and both are cheaper than replacing a dead tree twice.
Where the layer sits in the first foot, trenching for irrigation also changes character. What is a trencher job on deep soil becomes rock saw and breaker work, and the excavation line on a quote can double. What the number does for a quote
A contractor pricing planting or irrigation on your lot is estimating excavation difficulty either way. Handing over four depth readings and a note on hardness removes the guess.
In practice it changes the shape of the quote you get. With a measured depth, the excavation allowance can be written against a known condition rather than padded against an unknown one. Without it, a quote either carries a contingency you pay for regardless, or a flat number that gets revised when the bar hits stone on day one.
